Theory Test & Hazard Perception
The DSA (Driving Standards Agency) introduced the Theory Test to all Provisional
Licence holders in 1996. Since then the Theory Test has been revised several
times, most significantly with the additional Hazard Perception element which
was introduced in 2002.
All learner drivers wishing to book and take a
practical driving test are required to first complete a Theory and Hazard
Perception test and achieve a pass certificate.
The Theory Test consists of a series of multiple choice questions based on
various topics which include road safety, road signs, vehicle maintenance &
legal obligations. You will be asked to answer 50 random questions and correctly
answer at least 43 of these to pass.
The Hazard Perception test is a series of video clips that are shown to you
after you have complete the multiple choice questions. In these clips you will
be measured on you ability to identify developing hazards and will be scored
accordingly.
In order to successfully pass the Theory and Hazard Perception test a
candidate must sit and take both tests on the same day and pass both elements of
the test. If either element is failed then the entire test will be recorded as
failed and the candidate would need to rebook another test.
